Und wer in diesen Bannkreis tritt, wird vom Geist der neuen Zeit ergriffen.
[And who steps into this realm will be enchanted by the spirit of a new age.]

Artistic research project about the past, present and future of river Emscher in Germany's former industrial centre Ruhrgebiet. Due to rapid and uncontrolled coal mining and industrialisation in the 19th century the river was severly affected by ground submergence and toxic pollution. Desastrous hygenic conditions led to the foundation of Emschergenossenschaft, a technocratic institution that regulates and manages the river since 1904. During the 20th century the river was completely canalised and relocated in order to serve as the industrial region's sewage outlet channel. Since coal mining came to an end in recent years, Emschergenossenschaft launched a new programme to disentangle the river from its function as an open sewer by building a 70 km long sewage canal underground and recreating river landscapes with natural appeal on the surface. The last existing part of the original river bed was restored and serves as a pont in Oberhausen's Kaisergarten.
